This small hamlet sits quietly in the valleys near Guiting Power in Gloucestershire, tucked away in the kind of countryside you discover when you wander the quieter lanes rather than heading straight to busier villages.
That remoteness is actually its appeal.
The main reason to come here is the Church of St Mary, a genuine 12th-century building that demonstrates real Norman architecture and medieval craftsmanship. It's Grade I listed, which reflects its outstanding historical importance. Inside, you'll find features that have survived centuries of English history—original stonework and architectural details that show how people worshipped here eight hundred years ago.
The hamlet itself is deeply rural and peaceful, with very little commercial development, which keeps things feeling authentic and largely unchanged. It's excellent for walking, especially if you're combining a visit with nearby Guiting Power or exploring the network of footpaths that crisscross this part of Gloucestershire.
Temple works best as part of a broader exploration of the area rather than as a destination on its own. You'll need your own transport to get here since public services are limited. If you're genuinely interested in early English churches and don't mind seeking out quieter spots away from the main tourist routes, the effort to visit is worthwhile.
