Tarlton is a small hamlet in the heart of the Cotswolds, a few miles south of Cheltenham, where rolling farmland and woodland create an genuinely quiet corner of the countryside.

You'll encounter more sheep than people here, which is rather the point if what you're after is real peace away from busier areas.

The hamlet's main claim to note is its connection to Alfred Hoare Powell, an influential Arts and Crafts designer and architect who made his home here in the early twentieth century. Powell was deeply involved in the movement's work, creating pottery and furniture while also taking on architectural commissions. His choice to base himself in Tarlton speaks to the Cotswolds' significant role during this period, when the Arts and Crafts movement was championing traditional craftsmanship as a counterpoint to industrial manufacturing.

What you'll find on the ground is modest but genuine: a church and scattered stone cottages scattered about in the local vernacular style. There are no particular visitor facilities here, which rather reflects the nature of the place. The real draw is the landscape itself and the footpaths threading through the surrounding countryside, many of which connect through to neighbouring villages. Cirencester sits about ten miles south and works well as a base, with all the usual shops, restaurants and places to stay. Fairford and Lechlade are also nearby and offer their own facilities and things to explore.

Come for a walk and to feel the countryside that inspired creative minds over a century ago.
