This village has grown up around one of the Cotswolds' most significant castles, which naturally draws visitors with an interest in English history and gardens.

Sudeley Castle commands the landscape, with roots extending back to the 12th century, though the main structure was built in 1443. What makes it particularly compelling is its royal past—King Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn came here in 1535, and Catherine Parr, Henry's sixth wife, lived out her final years on the estate and is buried in the castle's church. This makes Sudeley the only privately owned castle in Britain with a queen buried within its grounds.

The estate spreads across 1,200 acres, with fifteen acres of well-tended gardens that genuinely reward exploration and shift in character through the seasons. Parts of the castle remain ruined, which actually adds to the atmosphere rather than diminishing it. The stonework and grounds convey genuine history without feeling overly manicured.

Nearby Winchcombe is a proper medieval market town with shops, pubs, and all the services you might need. From here you're well positioned to explore the surrounding countryside on foot or by car. If you're interested in castle history, Tudor connections, or want to spend time on substantial grounds with real character, this is worth setting aside a few hours for.
