Queen's Garden

in Sudeley

This formal garden sits within the historic grounds of Sudeley Castle, just outside Winchcombe.

It's particularly celebrated for its collection of old-fashioned roses, which reach their peak during summer months and fill the space with colour and fragrance. The garden's name reflects its remarkable past; it's believed to occupy the site of an original medieval knot garden where four English queens – Anne Boleyn, Catherine Parr, Lady Jane Grey, and Elizabeth I – once walked. As you move through the same pathways, you can't help but think about the royal figures who came before you.

The garden rewards a leisurely visit. The carefully designed symmetrical beds create an atmosphere that's as much about quiet reflection as it is about admiring the horticulture. There's something peaceful about spending time here, whether you're studying the planting design or simply sitting with your thoughts.

While you're at Sudeley, you'll want to see the rest of the castle and its other gardens, and Catherine Parr's tomb in the chapel is definitely worth visiting. Winchcombe, just down the road, has pleasant pubs and independent shops if you need refreshment or supplies. Cheltenham is nearby too if you're after bigger town facilities.
