In the Rodborough valley near Stroud, you'll find the remains of a coal chute that once supplied the Stroud Gas Light & Coke Company.
It's a straightforward piece of industrial engineering, but it tells an important story about how the town developed. From the Victorian era through the 20th century, this gasworks heated and lit homes and businesses across Stroud, and this chute was essential to keeping that operation running. The structure itself shows solid practical design, and standing here gives you a real sense of the labour that went into powering the town's growth.
The Rodborough valley holds more than just Victorian industry though. Archaeological finds in the area reveal Roman settlement, meaning you're walking through layers of human history spanning centuries. If you want to stretch your legs after exploring the chute, Rodborough Common is a short walk away and offers decent views across the countryside. It's a good spot to clear your head before heading into Stroud town centre itself, which has independent cafes and shops worth browsing. The Farmers' Market runs on Saturdays if you happen to visit then. The whole area rewards a few hours of gentle wandering if you're interested in how communities actually developed and what sustained them.
