Just outside Stroud's town centre, Strachan's Close Slipway provides a straightforward place to access the Stroudwater Navigation.
If you're bringing your own canoe, kayak, or paddleboard, this is your launching point into the historic canal system that threads through the Stroud Valleys. You can paddle east toward the town centre or venture west along sections of the canal that are being actively restored and improved.
You don't need a boat to enjoy this spot. The towpath running alongside the water offers an excellent walk, where you can take in the slower pace of canal life and watch narrowboats pass by. This waterway has real significance locally—it was once a crucial commercial route, and its current restoration shows how heritage and modern recreation can work together.
The slipway itself is essentially functional rather than a destination on its own, but it does give you a genuine sense of the waterways and their importance to people across the centuries. The canal stretches through some pleasant countryside, and you're never far from Stroud's amenities. Once you've spent time by the water, the vibrant market town is just a short distance away, where you'll find cafes, restaurants, independent shops, and galleries worth exploring.
