This small settlement sits along the Thames in West Oxfordshire, roughly six miles south of Witney, and serves as a quiet gateway to one of the region's most important natural spaces.
The hamlet itself is modest—a scattered collection of properties around the riverside—but its location makes it genuinely worth visiting if you're drawn to nature and river landscapes.
The real reason to come here is Chimney Meadows, a 620-acre nature reserve run by the Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire Wildlife Trust. It's the largest reserve they manage, and you'll understand why once you're there. The meadows stretch across traditional floodplain habitat, supporting an abundance of wildflowers, birds, and insects throughout the year. Spring brings expanses of snake's head fritillaries, while summer is excellent for spotting dragonflies and various bird species. Walking paths meander through the reserve, offering the kind of genuine quiet that's increasingly rare—a place where you can actually hear yourself think.
Shifford Lock nearby provides a natural focal point for riverside walks, and the Thames Path runs through this section if you're considering a longer hike. The landscape feels genuinely rural without feeling remote, and the reserve's visitor facilities are friendly and approachable without being over-commercialised. If you're based in Witney or exploring the wider Cotswolds, it's an easy drive for a half-day visit centred on nature rather than shops or attractions.
