When you're exploring the eastern edges of the Cotswolds, Marlborough deserves a proper visit.

The town's visitor information point sits right in the centre and has a connection to Samuel Pepys, the famous 17th-century diarist who passed through and recorded his observations, including details of the devastating fire of 1653. It's a useful first stop for maps and local advice before you venture out.

The real draw is Marlborough's exceptionally wide High Street, where you'll find independent shops, welcoming cafes, and good restaurants scattered along its length. It rewards a slow wander. St Peter's Church, now active as a community space, is worth stepping inside. The River Kennet offers pleasant walks through town, and on the nearby hills you can spot the Marlborough White Horse. The town itself has genuine historical weight, having served as an important coaching station in its day.

Beyond the town centre, you're well positioned for several worthwhile trips. Avebury's ancient stone circle is just a short drive away, and Savernake Forest makes for good exploration if you fancy woodland walks. Devizes and Hungerford are both within easy reach if you want to expand your itinerary. Marlborough works well as either a destination in itself or a useful base for this part of the region.
