Out in the northern reaches of the Cotswolds sits the village of Pillerton Priors, where you'll find the church of St Mary Magdalene.
This is a working parish church rather than a museum piece, and it has real substance to it. Most of what stands today originates from the 12th century, with particularly impressive Norman details to discover once you step inside—the doorway is especially worth looking at. The saddleback roof is quite distinctive, and the building shows signs of careful upkeep across the centuries. It's one of those places that encourages you to spend time wandering around and taking in the craftsmanship that went into raising and maintaining it generation after generation. The churchyard provides a peaceful spot to sit and think, usually with views stretching out over the fields beyond. There's no formal schedule of events—the real appeal is simply experiencing an authentically old English church and reflecting on the community that built it and kept it standing. If you want refreshments or need to pick up supplies, Shipston-on-Stour is a short drive away and pairs well with a visit here. Stratford-upon-Avon is also reasonably accessible if you're looking for a wider range of places to eat and more substantial attractions.
