Rodbourne is a quiet rural village in northern Wiltshire, positioned five miles south of Tetbury and conveniently placed for visiting Swindon and Chippenham.
The village itself is small and peaceful, but its real draw is proximity to Malmesbury, a medieval town that deserves time on any Cotswolds itinerary.
Malmesbury sits on a hilltop almost entirely encircled by the Bristol Avon and its tributaries, a geography that provided natural defense and attracted an Iron Age fort long before the Anglo-Saxons settled here. The abbey's foundation in the early medieval period transformed the town into a significant center of learning, drawing scholars from across Europe to its monastery. The abbey's importance is underscored by the burial of King Æthelstan, the first king to rule all of England, here in 939. Later, during Alfred the Great's reign, Malmesbury was fortified as a burh—part of a strategic network of strongholds built to counter Viking threats—which helped secure its prosperity as a market town throughout the Middle Ages.
You can wander through the atmospheric abbey ruins, explore the historic town center, and experience firsthand why this location held such significance through the centuries. The riverside setting is pleasant to walk around, and the good connections to larger towns nearby make this area a sensible base for exploring the broader Cotswolds region.
