This working cinema and live performance venue in central Gloucester opened as the Regal Cinema back in 1939, and you'll immediately notice the Art Deco interior has been carefully maintained.

It's the kind of place that reminds you cinemas used to be proper destinations rather than just functional boxes, with genuine character and atmosphere that modern multiplexes tend to lack.

The programming strikes a nice balance between classic films and recent releases, so there's usually something worth catching. What really makes it special though is the live entertainment calendar running throughout the year—stand-up comedy, live music, and theatre productions mean it functions as a proper cultural venue for the city rather than just showing films. You might pop in for a film one month and find yourself back for a live performance the next.

The restoration has been done thoughtfully, keeping the original charm intact while making sure everything actually works well for visitors. Gloucester itself is a good spot to base yourself, with the cathedral and historic Docks both easily accessible, and the theatre sits in a handy location if you're using the city as a jumping-off point for exploring the wider Cotswolds. It's genuinely the kind of place locals will recommend to you, which usually says something worth paying attention to.
