This small village in the Stroud district is centred around Owlpen Manor, a Tudor house that has been passed down through the Mander family for generations.
The manor is Grade I listed and stands as one of the area's finest examples of domestic Tudor architecture, with distinctive chimneys and stone walls that draw visitors from across the region.
The estate sits in a secluded valley within the Cotswold Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, offering a chance to experience the landscape away from the busier tourist spots. The manor house opens to visitors on select days, where you can explore the period rooms, gardens, and grounds at your own pace. The grounds feature formal gardens, woodland walks, and views across the valley that capture what makes this part of Gloucestershire special.
The village itself is quiet and rural, which is very much the point. You're close enough to Dursley and Uley to combine a visit with exploring those larger villages, but far enough away to feel genuinely removed from everyday life. The location works well if you're walking the Cotswold Way or exploring the valleys around Stroud. Most people visit as part of a wider exploration of the area rather than making it their sole destination, but spending an afternoon here gives you a genuine sense of how traditional Cotswold estates function and evolve.
