Stepping into this remarkable tree collection in the south Cotswolds feels like walking through a living museum.

You'll find a global display of trees spread across over 600 acres, maintained by the Forestry Commission. The collection began in the mid-1800s when Robert Stayner Holford, a devoted plantsman, started gathering species from around the world. His son George continued this work, developing what is now one of the most important arboretums globally.

You can easily spend hours exploring the different areas here. The Old Arboretum and Silk Wood are particularly rewarding, and the various glades each have their own distinctive character. Autumn brings real drama to the place, with maples and acers creating a spectacular colour display. Spring is equally impressive when rhododendrons and magnolias burst into bloom. The Treetop Walkway offers a completely different perspective, letting you wander high among the canopy and see the collection from above.

Walking paths crisscross the grounds and are gentle enough for all ages and fitness levels. There are plenty of family-friendly activities available, plus cafes and a shop if you need refreshment or want to take something home. Location-wise, you're only a short drive from Tetbury, and it's also easily reached from Malmesbury and Cirencester, making it a natural addition to any Cotswolds visit.
