Oakridge is a small working village in the Stroud Valley, about six miles east of Stroud itself.

It's the kind of place where you'll find local life ticking along much as it has for centuries, without the self-conscious tourism that defines some Cotswolds settlements.

The village grew up around the textile industry that dominated this valley, and you can still see evidence of that heritage in the old mills and workers' cottages scattered throughout. The landscape here is quite dramatic—steep wooded hillsides rise on either side, creating a real sense of being tucked into the countryside rather than sitting on top of it. There's a pleasant walk down to the valley floor along quiet lanes, and the surrounding hills offer excellent rambling if you're into that sort of thing.

St. Bartholomew's Church is worth a look if you're passing through. It's a straightforward medieval building that tells you something about how long people have been living here.

What makes Oakridge work is that it's genuinely lived-in. There's a village hall and a few local businesses, but you won't find gift shops or gastropubs trying too hard. It's perfect if you want to see how the Cotswolds actually functions rather than how it's been packaged for visitors. The proximity to Stroud—which has proper amenities and a genuine creative community—makes it a good base for exploring both the village life and the wider area.
