If you want to experience a side of the Cotswolds that reaches back much further than the medieval period, this Roman military camp offers something quite different.
Located near Andoversford, Norbury Camp preserves the remains of what was likely a temporary or semi-permanent base for Roman soldiers, giving you a chance to step back nearly two thousand years.
Don't expect impressive standing structures here. Instead, you'll be exploring earthworks – the raised banks and ditches that once formed the defensive perimeter of the camp. Walking across the landscape, you can trace these subtle features and get a real sense of how the site was laid out. It's easy to picture the legions stationed here, possibly keeping watch over the strategic Fosse Way, which served as a crucial military and trade route during the Roman occupation of Britain.
This is very much an outdoor experience, so bring proper walking shoes and come prepared to use your imagination to bring the site to life. There aren't visitor facilities or interpretation centres, but the peaceful surroundings make it a reflective place to consider the camp's military history. Andoversford village is right nearby if you need refreshments, and Cheltenham is a short drive away for more substantial facilities, shops, and restaurant options.
