This small village sits in the southern Cotswolds between Wantage and the market town of Faringdon, making it convenient to reach from the A420.
It's the kind of place where you'll find yourself slowing down naturally, with stone cottages scattered along quiet lanes and genuine countryside all around.
The village is worth a visit mainly for its architectural heritage. Thomas Rayson, who was born here in 1888, became a respected architect based in Oxford, and you can see the influence of thoughtful design in some of the properties around the village. Rayson was also a talented watercolourist, and his connection to the area reflects the creative traditions that have always drawn people to the Cotswolds.
Walking through Lyford, you'll notice the quality of the local stonework and the way buildings sit comfortably in the landscape. There's a church worth exploring if you enjoy local history, and the surrounding countryside offers excellent walking opportunities with good views across the valley.
For facilities, you're close enough to Faringdon and Wantage to find shops, pubs, and restaurants, but Lyford itself remains genuinely rural. It works well as a stop on a countryside walk or as a base for exploring the quieter side of the region without the busier tourist routes. The peace here feels authentic rather than contrived.
