Just outside the village of Charney Bassett lies Cherbury Camp, an Iron Age hillfort that dates back thousands of years to a time well before the Romans arrived in Britain.

Rather than standing structures, what remains here are the earthworks themselves – substantial banks and ditches arranged in circular patterns that once formed either a defensive stronghold or an important tribal gathering place.

The best way to experience it is to walk the ramparts and follow the contours of the ancient defences. As you move along them, you start to understand the enormous effort and planning that went into creating these structures. The higher ground offers broad views across the surrounding countryside, making it an ideal spot for a relaxed walk and a chance to think about how people lived during the Iron Age. It's the kind of place that naturally draws you to pause and consider the layers of history beneath your feet.

Practically speaking, you're well positioned if you're exploring the wider area – the market towns of Wantage and Faringdon are nearby, both with shops, restaurants, and other amenities if you want to make a fuller day of it. It's an easy visit that combines a bit of gentle walking with genuine archaeological interest, and you'll likely have the place largely to yourself, unlike some of the more well-known sites in the region.
