This quiet hamlet sits just west of Swindon, offering a rural retreat on the edge of the North Wessex Downs and wider Cotswolds area.
Lydiard Green itself is mainly residential, but it serves as an excellent base for exploring Lydiard Park, one of the region's historical treasures.
Lydiard Park is where the real interest unfolds. You can spend time at Lydiard House, a grand Palladian building that was once home to the St John family, wandering through centuries of history within its walls. The adjoining St Mary's Church is equally rewarding, with beautiful medieval wall paintings and a fascinating lineage of its own. The parkland beyond invites leisurely walks, picnics, or simply time spent in open space.
The surrounding countryside is wonderfully peaceful, with footpaths threading through it for gentle exploration. This is a good choice if you're after a quieter base away from the busier tourist routes. Swindon lies just east, a short drive away, offering shops, restaurants, and a main train station whenever you need those conveniences. Head west and you'll find yourself closer to other villages and towns that carry more of the typical Cotswold character you might be seeking.
