You'll find this Roman villa within the grounds of Littlecote House, an Elizabethan manor estate just a couple of miles from Hungerford in Wiltshire.

The villa itself dates back to the 1st century AD and gives you a genuine sense of how wealthy Romano-British families lived during the height of Roman occupation.

The actual remains include foundations and hypocaust heating systems that once warmed Roman floors. Archaeologists have uncovered some impressive finds here—mosaics and pottery that reveal the sophistication and craftsmanship of the residents. The most striking discovery was an intricate geometric mosaic that really shows the skill required to create these pieces.

The site sits within 34 hectares of parkland and gardens, making it a pleasant place to explore. What's particularly interesting is how you can see nearly two thousand years of occupation in one location: the Roman ruins lie beneath the later Elizabethan house, which tells you something about how valuable this landscape has always been. The main house now operates as a hotel and leisure centre, so you can combine viewing the Roman remains with a look around the later building and understand how the estate evolved over time.

It's easily done as a half-day visit from Hungerford, and if you want to extend your time here, the surrounding Wiltshire countryside offers good walking routes.
