You'll find the Kennet and Avon Canal Trust Store at Devizes Wharf in a former bonded warehouse, positioned right where the canal's commercial life once thrived.
It's a genuine starting point if you're interested in waterway heritage, and you'll likely leave with something worth having.
The building carries real history. During the late 1700s and early 1800s, imported wine from Bristol Harbour moved through here, which tells you how important the canal was for trade and transport back then. Today the shop stocks books, maps, and items related to the waterway's story. You can pick up practical guides for walking routes and boat trips, plus detailed information about the Caen Hill Flight, just a mile away—those sixteen locks rising steeply in quick succession are genuinely impressive engineering.
The staff work closely with the canal museum and know this area thoroughly. They can suggest the best spots for exploring and will talk you through the canal's restoration story. It fell into real decline through much of the twentieth century before being carefully brought back to life. The official reopening in 1990 was significant enough that Queen Elizabeth II signed the visitor book that day.
Devizes itself is a proper market town with everything you need, and this store makes a logical stop whether you're a dedicated canal enthusiast or just passing through the Cotswolds and Wiltshire borderlands.
