You'll find one of the world's most significant tree collections here, a working arboretum managed by Forestry England that contains around 15,000 specimens from across the globe.

Robert Stayner Holford established the site in the mid-19th century as a passionate tree collector, and his vision created a place of genuine botanical importance that continues its conservation work today.

The grounds offer several ways to explore depending on what appeals to you. The Old Arboretum features formally arranged specimen trees that showcase rare and exotic varieties, while Silk Wood provides a more natural woodland experience. Many visitors make a beeline for the Treetop Walkway, which lets you move through the canopy at height – something that appeals equally to young children and seasoned walkers.

You could easily spend most of a day here, wandering the various paths at whatever pace suits you. Each season rewards a visit differently: autumn brings impressive colour displays that attract crowds, spring offers vibrant blooms, and summer provides cool shade beneath the trees.

The arboretum has cafes where you can grab refreshments and shops selling gifts. It's conveniently located near Tetbury, a working market town with plenty of independent shops and real character, and also makes a practical stopping point if you're heading toward historic Malmesbury.
