Horsley is a small working village in the eastern Cotswolds, positioned between Nailsworth and Wotton-under-Edge.

It's the kind of place where you can have a quiet walk past the church and stone cottages without battling crowds, though the village itself is fairly modest. The real reason to come here is the woodland that surrounds it.

The Kingscote and Horsley Woods complex—comprising Conygre Wood, Sandgrove Wood, and Fishponds Wood—is a substantial area of ancient woodland that's been recognized as biologically important since the 1960s. Rather than being managed for timber production, these woods are maintained with wildlife in mind, so you'll find genuine habitat for birds, insects, and plants. The mixed broadleaf forest is particularly lovely in spring and autumn, with well-maintained paths threading through. It feels genuinely wild for the Cotswolds, giving you a proper sense of escape from roads and civilization.

Horsley works best as a walking base rather than a destination to linger in. Amenities are limited to a pub or two, so come prepared. If you're planning a broader outing, Nailsworth to the south has more facilities and its own distinctive character, while Wotton-under-Edge to the north is worth the short trip to see a traditional market town. Use Horsley as your jumping-off point for serious woodland exploration.
