History of Meon Vale

Just a short drive from Stratford-upon-Avon, this site offers a different angle on Cotswolds history than you'll find in the medieval market towns scattered across the region.

During the Second World War, the land here became HMS Ariel, a Royal Naval Air Station where aircrews trained for combat operations. As the war wound down, it took on new identities—HMS Attack and then RAF Long Marston—before becoming a vital demobilisation centre where thousands of service personnel processed their transition back to civilian life.

The original military infrastructure has largely been replaced by Meon Vale, a modern residential community now occupying the site. As you walk around today, you can still spot remnants of that wartime period. Some original features and interpretative displays remain to help you understand what this place meant to those who served here and the families waiting for them to come home. It's worth spending time exploring these traces and thinking about the significant role this location played in the broader wartime effort and post-war recovery.

What makes a visit particularly rewarding is the contrast between this 20th-century chapter and the ancient history you'll find in nearby towns. You get a fuller picture of how the region has been shaped by different eras of British history, from medieval times through to modern day.
