This small village sits on the edge of the Cotswold escarpment in Gloucestershire, offering expansive views across the Severn Vale that can stretch for miles when conditions are right.

Most people come here for Haresfield Beacon, a modest hilltop that's become popular with locals for walking and picnicking, especially around sunset when the light transforms the valley below.

The beacon stands on geologically significant ground. The exposed rocks here record millions of years of ancient seas and tropical climates, which is why the site has been designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest. You don't need to be interested in geology to appreciate it though. The open grassland with scattered trees makes for easy walking, and there are benches positioned to take advantage of the views while you rest with a drink.

The village itself is small and residential, with minimal shops or restaurants, but that's very much by design. It genuinely feels separate from more developed areas nearby. Stroud sits about five miles away if you need more facilities or services. This location works particularly well as part of a longer walk along the escarpment, where you can combine it with neighbouring villages or venture into the surrounding countryside. The village rewards a leisurely visit rather than a hurried one, inviting you to settle in and take your time exploring what's here.
