If you're heading south from Edge towards Stroud, you'll come across Hardwicke Court, a substantial estate that represents several centuries of English architectural evolution.

It's a private home rather than somewhere you can visit on a whim, but it's definitely worth understanding if you're getting to know this part of the Cotswolds properly.

The building started out as an Elizabethan property, though most of what stands today reflects much later work. Samuel Teulon, a significant Victorian architect, substantially redesigned the house in the mid-19th century, building on alterations that had already been made during the 1700s. The grounds are equally important historically, with William Andrews Nesfield creating the extensive park and gardens at the same time Teulon was working on the house. Both are Grade II* listed.

You won't be able to turn up and explore freely, but the gardens do open occasionally for charity events, typically arranged through the National Garden Scheme. If you're keen on gardens, it's sensible to check what's on before you visit the area. Even if an open day doesn't work out, driving along the nearby lanes gives you a genuine sense of the place and how it sits within the landscape. Gloucester is just a short drive away, which makes fitting Hardwicke Court into a wider Cotswolds trip quite straightforward.
