Hannington is a small village in the southern Cotswolds, about four kilometres south of Fairford in Gloucestershire.
You'll find it's the kind of place where you experience genuine rural England without feeling like you've wandered onto a heritage theme park.
The village centres around St Mary the Virgin church and scattered traditional stone cottages and farmhouses typical of the area. The church itself is worth exploring if medieval architecture interests you, with some interesting monuments inside. The surrounding countryside is genuinely working farmland, so you'll see actual agriculture rather than just manicured tourist landscapes.
The River Coln runs through the area, offering pleasant walks along the water meadows, and the wider footpath network connects you to neighbouring villages. Hannington works well as a base for exploring this quieter corner of the Cotswolds. Fairford, just up the road, has more facilities and attractions including its impressive perpendicular church, pubs, and shops if you need them.
One thing worth knowing in advance: the village sits quite close to RAF Fairford, so you might occasionally hear aircraft overhead, particularly during training exercises. It's worth bearing in mind if you're seeking total peace and quiet. For a proper day out, most people combine time here with visits to Fairford and perhaps venture further into the Cotswolds proper.
