This woodland nature reserve sits near Lydiard Millicent and offers something quite different from the more visited spots in the region.

The core of Hagbourne Copse is mixed woodland threaded with good footpaths that let you move at whatever pace suits you, whether that's a short stroll or a longer ramble deeper into the trees. Come during spring or summer and you'll hear plenty of birdsong, and if you watch carefully you'll spot woodland birds, insects, and butterflies going about their business. It's exactly the sort of place locals slip away to when they want some quiet time outdoors.

There's nothing historically grand here, but that's rather the point. What matters is what the reserve protects. It's been properly managed over the years to keep the local ecology healthy, functioning as a valuable patch of green within the wider landscape. Walking through it gives you a genuine feel for how the area's natural character works, without any fuss or formality attached.

Lydiard Millicent village is just nearby and has an understated, straightforward character. For better shopping, eating, or other facilities, Swindon is a short drive away and has everything a larger town typically offers. Malmesbury is also reasonably close and delivers the sort of market town atmosphere you'd expect from this part of the world. Hagbourne Copse fits best as part of exploring the wider area rather than as a standalone destination.
