A short drive south of Swindon brings you to this quiet village, useful if you want to escape the town without going far.

The main reason to visit is Lydiard Park, a country house that has belonged to the St John family for centuries. The interior shows how wealthy families actually lived across different periods, with period rooms that give you a genuine sense of their daily life rather than just grand reception spaces. You can wander through woodland and open parkland on the grounds, which are pleasant enough for a leisurely couple of hours.

The church of St Mary stands next to the house and is genuinely worth your time. It's full of Renaissance monuments and memorials dedicated to the St John family, and if you're interested in genealogy or local history, you could spend quite a while deciphering the inscriptions and understanding the family's story. Together, the house and church really do tell you how one family maintained their position and connections to this area over many generations.

The village itself is small and residential, nothing more, but combined with the park it makes a solid afternoon outing from Swindon. There's parking at the house, and the staff are usually good at helping you find your way around both the building and the grounds.
