Greyfriars Priory

in Gloucester

Illustration — photo coming soon

In the middle of Gloucester stands Greyfriars Priory, the remains of a Franciscan religious community that was once central to the city's life.

The Franciscans, known as Greyfriars for their grey habits, were mendicant friars committed to poverty and serving the people living in towns and cities. For centuries they established themselves here, until the 16th-century Dissolution brought religious houses across England to an end, leaving behind the atmospheric ruins visitors find today.

What remains includes fragments of the priory church and sections of the former cloister, all open for you to explore at your own pace. Despite being surrounded by the city, the site feels genuinely peaceful, and the preserved stonework gives you a real sense of what medieval religious life looked like in Gloucester. You won't need to spend hours here, but it's worth taking some quiet time to absorb the architecture and consider the daily rhythms of worship that once filled these spaces.

The location makes it easy to combine with other Gloucester attractions. The Cathedral, historic Docks, and shopping district are all nearby, so you can see several things in a single visit. If you're traveling through the wider Cotswolds region, the priory works well as a stopping point between places like Cheltenham, Painswick, and Stroud.
