Standing on what was once a highly sensitive military site just outside Newbury in West Berkshire, this museum occupies the preserved control tower from the former RAF Greenham Common airbase.

It's a striking reminder of a transformative period in recent history, offering visitors a genuine sense of what life was like during some of the most tense geopolitical moments of the twentieth century.

Inside the tower, exhibits trace the base's story from its operational beginnings in World War II through to the Cold War years, when American Cruise missiles were stationed here. The displays are thoughtfully arranged across the tower's various levels, allowing you to move through the spaces and imagine the activity and intensity that once filled them. Equally compelling is the documentation of the Women's Peace Camp protests of the 1980s, which brought international focus to the nuclear weapons issue and became a significant chapter in the base's history.

From the top of the tower, you get expansive views across Greenham Common itself, now open countryside and a nature reserve that's excellent for walking. The location makes it straightforward to combine with time in Newbury, which has good facilities and serves as a useful base for exploring the wider region. It's the kind of place that genuinely deepens your understanding of the period it represents.
