Fosse Way

in Crudwell

This ancient route, still in use across many stretches today, connects you directly to Roman Britain.

You won't find grand ruins to explore here, but what makes it remarkable is the sheer sense of scale and engineering prowess that went into Roman construction. Walk along this section near Tetbury and you're literally following paths used by legionaries and merchants nearly two thousand years ago. The Fosse Way was one of the longest and most important Roman roads, and its course across the country is strikingly straight, a real testament to Roman planning and execution.

Whether you take a short walk along the route or simply observe its path from a nearby spot, you can see how deeply it shaped the landscape. The road itself is the real monument here, often running alongside or underneath modern roads as it has done for nearly two millennia. While you won't find excavated buildings on this particular stretch, the road is what matters, and it makes for a rewarding combination of historical interest and pleasant countryside walking.

The market town of Tetbury lies very close by, full of antique shops and historic buildings, and works well as a base. A short drive north takes you to Cirencester, the Roman settlement of Corinium Dobunnorum, where you'll find far more visible remains including a museum and the outline of an amphitheatre. Visiting both spots gives you a fuller picture of Roman life in the region.
