East Tytherton is a small settlement with an unusual past that makes it well worth a visit if you're interested in social history.
The main draw here is the Moravian Church and the cluster of buildings around it, which were established in the mid-18th century by the Moravian Brethren as a self-sufficient community. What you see today are the original structures they built, including separate homes for single brethren and single sisters, a minister's house, and a school. The architecture reflects the communal purpose of these buildings and the period in which they were constructed, creating a cohesive layout that still feels intentional and considered.
This isn't a village where you'll find shops and tearooms, but rather a quiet place suited to a contemplative walk. There's something genuinely calming about moving through the space and observing how this community was designed to function. You can view the exteriors of the Moravian buildings and church, taking in the distinctive character that sets this place apart from other Cotswolds settlements.
Practically speaking, East Tytherton sits close to Calne, so it's straightforward to include on a broader day out. Chippenham is also nearby if you want to combine your visit with exploring larger towns. It's particularly rewarding if you're drawn to places with real historical significance and a strong sense of identity.
