Cleeve Hill Golf Club

in Cleeve Hill

One of England's oldest golf clubs operates from the expansive open ground of Cleeve Hill, having been established in the late nineteenth century.

The elevated position delivers sweeping views across the Cotswolds landscape and gives the course an unusual links-style character for an inland location. The exposed conditions here differ markedly from the sheltered, tree-lined courses found elsewhere in the area, creating a distinctive playing experience shaped by wind and weather.

The club occupies Cleeve Hill Common, which means the setting has a genuine openness that's rare for parkland courses. On clear days the views across the surrounding countryside are substantial, making the area pleasant to walk around regardless of whether you're interested in golf. Positioned just above Cheltenham, it's easily reached from the town but feels satisfyingly separate from everyday life.

The club remains a traditional members' establishment rather than a resort-style facility, so visitor access typically requires an introduction or prior arrangement rather than casual drop-in play. The course itself is relatively modest in length by contemporary standards but makes intelligent use of the natural topography. This is a genuine working club with a real community feel, quite different from what you'd experience at a commercial venue. The location alone makes the area worth exploring, with Cheltenham immediately below and plenty of Cotswolds walking and visiting nearby.
