This community-run museum sits just outside Chipping Norton and gives you real insight into one of the northern Cotswolds' most interesting market towns.
The town's name itself tells part of the story — 'Chipping' comes from an old word for market, and trading has been central to this place for centuries.
Inside you'll encounter exhibits about the area's geological past, its agricultural heritage, and the crucial role it played in the Cotswold wool trade. You'll see displays showing how people actually lived here over the centuries, alongside artifacts and photographs that document the town's evolution. What makes it special is that it's run largely by local volunteers who genuinely care about sharing their knowledge, including stories about the town you simply won't find anywhere else.
The museum works really well as part of a broader exploration of Chipping Norton itself. You can visit the impressive wool church and walk the historic streets, then come here to understand what created them. It's also conveniently positioned if you're moving around other northern Cotswold towns like Stow-on-the-Wold or Moreton-in-Marsh. Just check their opening hours before you visit, as these change with the seasons.
