When you're walking through Cheltenham's elegant streets lined with Regency squares and crescents, you'll find a building that belongs to a completely different era.

Cheltenham Minster, formerly known as St Mary's, is the only surviving medieval structure in the town, offering a genuine connection to what Cheltenham was like before it became a fashionable spa resort in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Step inside and you're immediately transported backwards. The building's foundation dates to the 12th century, with robust Romanesque stonework that's been added to over the centuries. You'll notice the later Perpendicular Gothic elements and the striking spire that pierces the town's skyline. The interior holds stained glass windows and memorials that tell stories of centuries of worship and community life. It's a genuinely peaceful space that offers respite from the bustle of the town centre just beyond its doors.

The church only received its Minster designation in recent years, a recognition of both its architectural significance and its importance throughout Cheltenham's development. What's particularly striking is how it sits amid the Georgian and Victorian shops, cafes, and theatres—medieval foundations surrounded by much later building. Located right in the heart of town, it's easily accessible and makes a rewarding stop during any visit to Cheltenham.
