Spend an afternoon or full day exploring one of the finest tree collections in the world at this southern Cotswolds arboretum.

Forestry England manages the site, which started as the personal project of Victorian plant collector Robert Stayner Holford in the mid-1800s. What began as his passion for gathering specimens from across the globe has grown into something of real significance.

The grounds split into two distinct areas, each offering a different experience. The Old Arboretum showcases formally planted avenues of impressive mature trees, while Silk Wood gives you a more natural woodland walk. If you want to see things from a different angle—literally—the Stihl Treetop Walkway lifts you up into the canopy. It's particularly good if you're visiting with children or prefer a gentler way to experience the landscape.

What you see changes considerably through the seasons. Autumn transforms the trees into striking colours, spring brings flowering specimens into their full display, and winter strips everything back to reveal the skeletal beauty of the branches themselves. You'll find cafes and picnic spots scattered around, and the venue regularly runs seasonal events and activities worth checking ahead for.

It's conveniently located just a short drive from Tetbury or Malmesbury, so you can easily fit it alongside other things to see in the area. Whether you're planning a quick couple of hours or a complete day out, this place works well for both.
