You'll discover something genuinely worth seeking out in the village of Severn Stoke, just east of the main Cotswolds area near the River Severn.
The real draw here is an 18th-century stone culvert designed by Lancelot 'Capability' Brown, the landscape architect whose work transformed how people thought about gardens and parks. Rather than just being functional, this elegant structure was built to carry a grand carriage drive over a stream while serving as part of what was once a sprawling parkland. It demonstrates Brown's approach perfectly—landscapes that look entirely natural but are actually the result of precise, deliberate design. His ideas had profound influence on how the English countryside developed and continues to look today.
Near the culvert stands a ruined structure with distinctly castle-like qualities, almost certainly added to the estate deliberately to create visual focal points and drama across the grounds. Walking around the site really gives you a sense of the engineering ability and artistic thinking Brown brought to everything he touched. You can almost imagine the carriages crossing the culvert and get a feel for how grand the original park must have been.
Technically this is Worcestershire rather than the Cotswolds proper, but it's worth the drive. The nearby town of Upton-upon-Severn has several cafes and riverside pubs for refreshment. It's an excellent stop if you're interested in landscape history and how 18th-century design shaped the English countryside.
