Caen Hill Marina sits just outside Rowde and serves as a working home to numerous narrowboats on the historic Kennet and Avon Canal.
This is a genuine spot where you can spend an afternoon simply watching the boats come and go, or use it as a starting point for exploring the waterway itself. The towpath here is excellent for walking or cycling, and the surrounding countryside is peaceful without feeling cut off from everything.
What makes this stretch of canal particularly special is the Caen Hill Lock flight, visible a short way along the water. This striking piece of Georgian engineering features 16 locks rising steeply in succession, and watching boats navigate their way through is quite something to witness. The canal was completed in the early 19th century to connect Bristol with London, and this section really demonstrates that industrial heritage.
The marina itself has practical amenities including a cafe where you can settle in with a drink and observe the activity on the water. If you fancy getting out on the canal yourself, day boat hire is available directly from here. The market town of Devizes is very close by, so you can easily combine a morning or afternoon at the marina with exploring the town's shops, pubs, and historical attractions. It's a straightforward visit that works well as either a standalone trip or part of a wider Cotswolds exploration.
