Avebury Trusloe, Avebury Avebury Trusloe is a small settlement west of its more famous neighbour. The conical hill in the background is Silbury Hill, said by some to be the remains of a load of old shoes dumped there by an itinerant cobbler on his way to (or perhaps from, I can't remember) Marlborough. This explanation is as likely as any other I've heard for the hill's existence.

in Winterbourne Monkton

Out on the open downland near Winterbourne Monkton sits a Bronze Age bowl barrow, an ancient burial mound constructed thousands of years ago by early inhabitants of this region.

There's no visitor centre or interpretive displays here—the appeal is more direct and personal. You can walk around the earthwork itself, observing its form and considering the considerable effort that went into building it, along with the ceremonies and rituals that once took place at this spot. It's a place for reflection, one that genuinely connects you to the deep history layered into this landscape and the long human presence here.

The barrow sits within a broader archaeological landscape of considerable significance. It's located not far from Avebury, an internationally important prehistoric complex, and forms part of the rich tapestry of ancient features scattered across the surrounding downland. You'll find it easily accessible from Winterbourne Monkton itself, a small village nearby. If you're looking for somewhere to rest, grab refreshments, or explore further, Marlborough is just a short drive away and serves as a useful base with shops and cafes.
