If you're looking for a spot that blends rural calm with significant history, this village in Wiltshire is worth exploring.
It's a place where the past feels very present, particularly through the remains of Bradenstoke Priory. Founded in the 12th century by the Augustinians, the priory was once a major religious house. After the Dissolution of the Monasteries, much of its stone was dispersed, famously with parts even making their way across the Atlantic. Today, you can still appreciate the scale and heritage of what remains, often incorporated into later buildings or standing as evocative ruins.
Beyond its historical anchor, Bradenstoke offers lovely walks through the surrounding countryside, typical of the Cotswolds landscape. It’s ideal for those who enjoy a slower pace, perhaps exploring the local lanes or visiting the village's own St Mary the Virgin church. For a bite to eat or a change of scenery, you're not far from other small communities like Dauntsey Lock, St. John's, and Dauntsey. New Zealand, St. James, and Goatacre are also close by, offering further opportunities to explore this gentle part of Wiltshire.
