A short uphill walk from Sudeley brings you to one of the Cotswolds' most striking archaeological sites.

Belas Knap is a Neolithic long barrow, a communal burial monument constructed by early farming communities over 5,000 years ago. The structure itself is remarkably well preserved, and walking around it gives you a genuine sense of the considerable effort and skill required to build it. What makes it particularly fascinating is the false entrance at the northern end—a deliberate architectural choice by the ancient builders—while the actual burial chambers are accessed from the sides of the mound.

When archaeologists excavated the site during the 19th century, they discovered the remains of multiple individuals, underscoring how significant this place was to the prehistoric communities living here. The barrow sits at a commanding position with sweeping views across the rolling Cotswold landscape, making the uphill walk thoroughly rewarding. Best of all, there's no charge to visit. English Heritage maintains the site, so you can explore at your own pace and take time to absorb the atmosphere.

Once you've finished, head back down to Winchcombe, a welcoming market town with plenty of cafes and restaurants for refreshment. Sudeley Castle is also conveniently nearby if you want to expand your visit to the area.
