Just a short distance from Swindon, this small hamlet provides a genuine escape from the busier parts of the Cotswolds.
It's primarily a rural area where you can enjoy the open countryside without the crowds, making it ideal if you want to stretch your legs and take in the landscape properly. The Basset Down Golf Complex is the main destination here, offering good facilities whether you want to play a full round or spend time at the driving range. If golf doesn't appeal, the surrounding downs are excellent for walking along public footpaths, with wide-open views across the agricultural land. There's no village centre with shops and cafes to speak of—Basset Down is really about the quiet of the natural environment rather than commercial bustle. Like many smaller hamlets in the region, its roots are in farming and centuries of gradual estate development. For a wider range of shops and restaurants, you'll need to head into Swindon, and if you're after a traditional market town experience, Marlborough and Malmesbury are both close by and worth exploring. But if you're looking for somewhere genuinely peaceful to base yourself or make a worthwhile detour for outdoor activities, Basset Down delivers exactly that.
