Oare is a small village with a quiet, unhurried feel, and the sort of base that rewards you for slowing down. It sits close enough to Pewsey that you're never far from somewhere to eat, something to look at or a path worth following, but far enough out to feel properly rural. Within about two miles you'll find four places to eat and drink, four places to visit, one spot for activities and a single shop, which tells you most of what you need to know: this is a place for walking, looking and lingering rather than ticking off a long list.

A good few hours might start with the Sarsen Way, the long-distance route that gives you a proper sense of the landscape underfoot and makes the rest of the day feel earned. Pick up something for the walk at Marshalls Bakery, then head to Pewsey Heritage Centre to put the surrounding countryside and its working past into context. Afterwards, The Golden Swan or The Shed Alehouse will see you right, and if the weather's kind, The Waterfront is a pleasant place to sit and let the afternoon run on.
