Yarnton is a village just northwest of Oxford that works well as a stop when you're exploring the wider Oxfordshire area.

It's close enough to the city for a straightforward day trip, but far enough out that you genuinely feel the rural character.

The Church of St John the Baptist is the main reason to visit. It's got some really worthwhile medieval details, including an impressive tower and excellent stonework. Like so many English villages, Yarnton grew up around its church, and standing in the center of the settlement gives you a strong sense of how that worked in practice.

Beyond the church, you'll find the kind of Oxfordshire character the region does well: stone cottages scattered along quiet lanes, and a village that's kept its identity despite being within easy reach of Oxford as a commuter base. There's a genuine community atmosphere here rather than the feel of a suburb. Pop into one of the local pubs and you'll find the kind of place where conversations with regulars are part of the experience.

The countryside around Yarnton repays some time on foot. Walking trails connect through to Kidlington and further afield, taking you across actual farmland and woodland rather than manicured country park. It's exactly the sort of place where an afternoon of aimless wandering tends to reveal things you wouldn't have set out looking for.
