Down in the Woodchester valley, just a short distance from Stroud, you'll find one of Roman Britain's most impressive country estates.

The real draw here is the Orpheus Mosaic, one of the largest and most detailed Roman mosaics discovered anywhere north of the Alps. It depicts Orpheus surrounded by animals in remarkable detail, and it's genuinely striking when you get to see it.

The mosaic is normally kept covered to protect it from the weather, so it's only revealed during occasional special events. If you're hoping to catch a viewing, it's worth checking local heritage websites beforehand to find out when it might be uncovered next. Even when the mosaic isn't on display, the sheer scale of the villa itself speaks volumes about the wealth and status of the Romans who lived here. Walking around the site gives you a real sense of how significant this estate was within the wider Roman province.

The location works well if you want to combine history with other activities. Stroud, just nearby, is a genuine market town with plenty of independent shops and a farmers' market that draws visitors throughout the week. Nailsworth is only a short drive away too, so you can easily fit this into a wider Cotswolds exploration. It's a compelling stop for anyone interested in ancient history and the lives of the Romano-British elite.
