Upper Upham is a small hamlet where the Cotswolds countryside opens up into rolling farmland and traditional villages.

What makes it special is its location along the Monarch's Way, a 625-mile long-distance footpath established in 1994 that follows King Charles II's escape route after his defeat at the Battle of Worcester in 1651. The trail stretches from Worcester through Bristol and Yeovil all the way to Shoreham on the Sussex coast, making it one of England's most historically significant walking routes.

The hamlet itself is quiet and rural, but you'll find yourself sharing the path with other walkers exploring this piece of English history. The Monarch's Way is fully waymarked with distinctive green diamonds, so whether you're tackling the entire route or just walking a section nearby, navigation is straightforward. The path is maintained by the Monarch's Way Association working alongside local councils.

Walking through Upper Upham puts you on the same routes Charles II would have travelled centuries ago, which appeals particularly to those interested in English Civil War history. It's also a good choice if you want to experience a long-distance footpath through the Cotswolds without the heavier foot traffic of more famous trails. Moreton-in-Marsh and Chipping Campden are the nearest larger towns, both offering shops and accommodation if you're planning extended walks in the area.
