The Trout Inn is a 17th-century riverside pub sitting just beyond Oxford at a Thames crossing, the kind of place locals have always known about but visitors tend to discover by chance.

The building carries the unmistakable marks of genuine age—exposed beams, real fires, worn wooden furniture—accumulated through centuries of actual use rather than any attempt at restoration.

What makes it special is simply where it stands. You're right on the water with views across to the ruins of Godstow Abbey on the opposite bank. Despite being only a couple of miles from Oxford's centre, the Thames feels genuinely peaceful here. When the weather cooperates, people scatter onto the terrace, and there's something about sitting with a pint by the river that makes you realise that's exactly what you came for.

Inside, it's straightforwardly traditional—no pretence, just the sort of room that's evolved through regular use. The food is honest pub cooking, nothing elaborate, and they take their real ales seriously. The lock and weir nearby give the whole setting that authentic working waterside atmosphere.

You can reach it on foot from central Oxford if you fancy a riverside walk, or drive and park easily. It's popular with people tackling longer Thames routes, and if you want to add some history, Godstow Abbey's ruins are right there across the water and worth exploring.
