About four and a half miles west of Wantage in the Vale of White Horse, Kingston Lisle is a small village built around one genuinely distinctive feature.
At its centre stands the Blowing Stone, a house with an unusual sarsen stone in its grounds that's naturally riddled with holes. You're actively encouraged to blow through them, and most people find themselves coming back for another attempt once they've had a go.
The stone carries real historical weight. Local tradition claims it was once used to summon the Wild Hunt or call up the militia during times of crisis—stories worth taking with a grain of salt, though actually trying to produce a sound from the holes tends to be far more engaging than you might expect.
What makes Kingston Lisle worth the journey is that it functions as a genuine working village rather than a polished tourist destination. There's something valuable in that authenticity. This isn't a place with obvious attractions packaged up for visitors; instead it rewards a bit of exploring and a willingness to engage with local history and folklore. If you're moving around Wantage or Faringdon, the small detour proves worthwhile. The combination of the stone's tactile appeal and the real sense of rural Oxfordshire life creates a stop that tends to linger in people's memories long afterwards.
