The SULA Lightship sits at Gloucester Docks and offers an unusual place to stay.
This working lightship was built in 1959 and spent decades guiding ships through the Humber Estuary before being brought to Gloucester and converted into a hotel and B&B. When you board, you're stepping into genuine maritime history. The vessel has kept many of its original features and machinery intact, so you get a real sense of what life was like for the crews who operated it. Each cabin is individually designed, and there's something special about sleeping on the water in an actual working ship — it's an experience you simply won't get in a standard hotel.
The docks location is excellent for getting around. You're within easy walking distance of good restaurants, independent shops, and the National Waterways Museum. Gloucester city centre, with its cathedral and full range of facilities, is also nearby. This makes the SULA a solid base if you want to explore Gloucester itself or use it as a starting point for the wider Cotswolds. Whether you're drawn to maritime heritage, looking for somewhere genuinely different to stay, or want to be in the middle of a lively riverside area with plenty happening, the SULA offers something you won't find in typical accommodation across the region.
