This small village sits in rolling Somerset countryside just south of the Cotswolds proper, and it's worth the journey for its genuine historical weight.
The real draw here is the Stoney Littleton Long Barrow, one of Britain's finest Neolithic monuments. Dating to around 3500 BC, this chambered tomb stretches roughly 30 metres along the hillside and has survived in remarkable condition. You can walk inside the stone gallery itself, which is genuinely moving when you consider its age. Multiple burial chambers branch off from a central passage, and excavations uncovered remains of several individuals, giving actual human stories to these ancient stones.
The barrow was among the very first monuments protected under the Ancient Monuments Protection Act in 1882, reflecting how seriously its preservation has been taken. The location itself offers pleasant views across the Somerset landscape, and South Littleton is the sort of quiet, unassuming village where the barrow really is the main event. You'll find basic facilities in the nearby town of Wellow, and the site sits conveniently for exploring other Cotswolds attractions if you're planning a wider tour. This is a place for people genuinely interested in prehistoric Britain rather than those expecting developed tourist infrastructure, but that's exactly what gives it its character and appeal.
